The benefits of healing from the 12-step program.

by Jackie M. Hoffman

There are so many ways that a drug or an alcohol addict can heal themselves through. The initial methods of healing come from the rehab centers in the form of the inpatient treatment program and the outpatient treatment program. These two methods have other versions of their method—they are called the intensive versions. The first one is called the intensive outpatient treatment program and the second one is called the intensive inpatient treatment program.

These two treatment programs come with therapy programs such as CBT therapy, individual therapy, group therapy, and many other forms of therapy. But the real problem here lies that this method is not enough sometimes. Sometimes a person needs that extra kick in their treatment program that they are lacking. Some people are more inclined towards the spiritual way of treating themselves in their addiction problem while some do not actually need to go that far.

What is the spiritual method of healing from addiction?

The spiritual method for healing from addiction lies in the religion, not exactly in the religion that the person follows, but just a few principles of religion are followed that God will always be there for you, that God will help you through the hard times when no one is there for you and all those things related to God and how He will help his men and women in times of problems.

In comes the 12-step program. This program was created when a group of people decided to find a method of healing from addiction that won’t include any medically accepted terms such as medications and the programs that are medically made and constructed. They thought that there has to be a way of healing a person through faith, through spirituality, through the inner workings of the heart and mind together.

The heart and the mind are connected together in more ways than one. The heart is where God resides, where a person’s sense of self, morality, spiritual self lies and this is what the 12-step program targets. They say that a person falls prey to the addiction because of the mind that is altered due to the traumatic even they go through. This traumatic event breaks them from the inside. The event could be so traumatic that they might have seen someone that they love die in front of their eyes, that they might have seen their pet pass away in their arms, or they might have lost their job because of humiliation or anything that bears the burden of great loss.

Addictive substances are for pleasure building, that is why people go towards drugs to heal their broken hearts. They dive straight into the pool of alcohol and drink away their pain only to realize the alcohol is drinking away them bit by bit and slowly turning them into a shell of their former selves and takes away the freedom that they had before they got into the curse of addiction. It is not a good sight to see at all.

So, the 12-step program comes in to save them. It will build a connection of the person with their God and make them understand that through thick and thin, through all the hard times that are to come—they can believe and trust in the power of God to help them through this addiction phase and help them through the treatment that is hard and really difficult to get through. But with the power of their spiritual awakening, they can finally see the other side of the tunnel and heal their broken selves and put each piece back in its place one by one.
