How Do I Choose the Right Rehab?

by Jackie M. Hoffman

When it comes to choosing the right rehab for you or someone you love, there are many factors that need to be taken into consideration. The following is a list of 8 factors that should be considered before making your choice

1. Country of treatment

The best rehabs are not always in the USA. A number of centers worldwide have implemented evidence-based practices into their therapy sessions and use technologies that are generally lacking in most American addiction programs. Not all people can afford this, but it is something to look out for when searching for a country to send your loved one to.

2. The rehab’s philosophy and approach to addiction treatment

While most American programs use a traditional abstinence-based model, there are various other options, such as strength-based models that recognize the potential for change, no matter what stage of change your loved one is in.

Additionally, many non-American programs may include medical detox services and residential housing or halfway houses where your loved one will be monitored for a longer period of time.

3. The credential of the treatment staff

This includes all staff, not just doctors and therapists. The kitchen workers, housekeeping staff, and maintenance crew should also have credentials that require formal training. All rehabs that we consider “top tier” have credentialed staff members.

4. The rehab’s facility type, size, and amenities

Luxury treatment centers will have quality facilities that include private rooms with suite bathrooms, high-end furnishings, and all the necessities one would need to feel comfortable while in treatment. Not all people can afford this type of luxury, but it is something to consider when searching for a program.

5. Method of treatment and intensity of care

Many American programs do not include halfway houses or sober living options after completing inpatient treatment, and this can mean that patients will be returning home to the exact same environment that instigated their addiction in the first place. Not all people are able to stay in treatment for 3-6 months, but many programs offer intensive outpatient care where patients can receive counseling 5 days per week.

6. Number of individual counseling sessions provided to your loved one

The number of counseling sessions will vary by program and may also be contingent upon whether or not your loved one is a part of a 12-step program while in treatment. Some centers have a cap on the number of individual counseling sessions that are provided, so this needs to be taken into consideration when searching for a program.

7. Relapse prevention plan and aftercare options

Aftercare plans should include sober living communities, alumni associations, social groups, support groups, and other programs where your loved one can access aftercare services. Successful treatment is not just about the initial rehab; it is also about the aftercare plan. Your loved one should leave with an individualized relapse prevention plan that can be followed up on in outpatient care or through support groups after completing formal treatment.

It’s essential that you think about what matters most for you personally when choosing a rehab center—and make sure it’s on this list of factors!  One size does not fit all when it comes to finding recovery. There are many different types of programs out there catering to every need, so take time to look around before making any decisions.
